Why Wisdom Teeth
Often Need to Go

Your wisdom teeth, or third molars, typically show up between ages 17 and 25. For some lucky folks, these teeth come in perfectly aligned and cause zero problems. But for most people, there simply isn't enough room in the mouth for these latecomers. When that happens, wisdom teeth can become impacted, meaning they're caught beneath the gum line or pushing against other teeth at awkward angles.

The issues that come with problematic wisdom teeth aren't just about discomfort. According to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, about 90% of Americans have at least one impacted wisdom tooth. These teeth can lead to infections, damage to neighboring teeth, cysts, and even shifts in your bite alignment. That's why many dental professionals recommend removing them before these complications develop, especially if X-rays show they're likely to cause trouble.

"About 90% of Americans have at least one impacted wisdom tooth."

What the Removal
Process Looks Like

Before any procedure, we take detailed X-rays to understand exactly where your wisdom teeth are positioned and how they're affecting the surrounding bone and teeth. Dr. Rand then discusses your sedation options, because your comfort matters to us. Some patients prefer oral sedation to stay relaxed during the procedure, while others feel fine with local anesthesia.

The actual extraction process differs depending on whether your teeth have erupted through the gums or remain impacted beneath the surface. For teeth that have already come through, the removal is similar to any tooth extraction. For impacted teeth, Dr. Rand makes a small incision in the gumline to access the tooth, sometimes dividing it into smaller sections to remove it more easily.

"Your comfort matters to us."

Recovery:
The First Few Days

Let's be honest about recovery: the first 48 hours after wisdom tooth removal aren't glamorous. You'll likely experience some swelling, mild discomfort, and the need to stick to soft foods. But most patients find that by day three or four, they're already feeling much better and returning to their normal routines.

Here's what helps during those initial days:

1

Apply ice packs to your face for 15-minute periods to minimize swelling.

2

Keep your head elevated when resting or sleeping.

3

Stick to smoothies, yogurt, soup, and other soft foods.

4
  • Avoid using straws, as the suction can dislodge the blood clots that are crucial for healing.
5

Take prescribed pain medication as directed, before discomfort becomes intense.

Most people can return to work or school within two to three days, though you'll want to avoid strenuous exercise for about a week. We provide detailed post-operative instructions and remain available to answer any questions that come up during your recovery. One complication we help you avoid is dry socket, which happens when blood clots become displaced and expose bone and nerves.
