What Is a
Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a fixed restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth. According to the American College of Prosthodontists, an estimated 178 million Americans are missing at least one tooth, making tooth replacement one of the most common needs in restorative dentistry.

The bridge consists of artificial teeth, called pontics, secured in place by dental crowns fastened to the teeth on either side of the gap. These supporting teeth are called abutments. Bridges can be made from an array of materials, including porcelain, ceramic, or a blend of materials chosen to match the color and look of your natural teeth.

The Dental Bridge Process

The procedure typically requires two visits. During the first appointment, we prep the abutment teeth by reshaping them to make space for the crowns. We then take precise impressions of your teeth using our iTero digital scanner, eliminating the need for messy traditional impressions. These digital impressions are sent to a dental laboratory where your custom bridge is crafted. You'll wear a temporary bridge while your permanent restoration is being made. At your second visit, we remove the temporary bridge and carefully fit and cement the permanent bridge in place.

Types of
Bridges Available

Different types of bridges serve different purposes depending on your specific situation.

01

Traditional Bridges

Traditional bridges are the most common style, using crowns on both sides of the gap to support the pontic. These work well when you have healthy, natural teeth on both sides of the missing tooth or teeth.

02

Cantilever Bridges

Cantilever bridges are used when there's only one natural tooth next to the gap. The pontic is supported by a crown on just one side. These are less common because they put more stress on the supporting tooth, but they can be effective in certain situations.

03

Maryland Bridges

Maryland bridges, also called resin-bonded bridges, use a metal or porcelain framework fused to the back of the adjacent teeth instead of crowns. This type is more conservative because it requires less alteration of the supporting teeth. However, Maryland bridges are typically suitable only for the front teeth, where biting forces are less intense.

04

Implant-Supported Bridges

Implant-supported bridges offer the most secure and long-lasting solution. Instead of relying on natural teeth for support, these bridges are fixed to dental implants surgically placed in your jawbone. This option prevents bone loss and doesn't require altering adjacent healthy teeth.

Benefits of Getting
a Bridge

Replacing missing teeth with a bridge provides numerous functional and aesthetic advantages. Bridges restore your ability to chew correctly, allowing you to comfortably eat a wider variety of foods. They also improve your speech, as missing teeth can affect how you pronounce certain sounds and words.

Aesthetically, bridges fill the gaps in your smile and help maintain the shape of your face. When teeth are missing, the neighboring teeth can shift position over time, leading to bite problems and a changed facial appearance. A bridge prevents this shifting by filling the space and keeping the surrounding teeth in their proper positions.

Bridges distribute bite forces more evenly across your remaining natural teeth, helping protect them from excessive wear. They also prevent the exposed gum tissue in the gap from becoming irritated or infected. With proper oral hygiene and regular professional care, bridges provide a durable, cost-effective solution for tooth replacement that looks and works like your real teeth.
